We are a community of faith that seeks to make a tangible difference in people's lives.
- by reaching out in mission and ministry
- by presenting a Gospel of hope in a faith tradition where every member is a minister
- by encouraging people to hammer out their own convictions about what is true and just
- by offering a spiritual home free from hard-line doctrinal demands
- by offering a strong, supportive community for fellow seekers who attempt the risky
business of living life with values at odds with our culture
We want our church to reflect God's kingdom, filled with young and old, people of diverse backgrounds, races, interests and professions as well as diverse beliefs and lifestyles. We are
concocting a rich stew of beliefs, lifestyles, dreams and interests here.
Don’t let the word "Baptist" fool you. We claim our Baptist heritage, and that means the freedom
to be very unlike some Baptists you read about. Someone once remarked, "When you've seen one
Baptist, all you've seen is one Baptist."
The Baptist faith was founded on advocacy of four basic freedoms:
- soul freedom—the direct access of each person to God,
without an intermediary
- Bible freedom—direct access to read and interpret the scripture freely.
Our tradition recognizes no ecclesiastical authority over the individual.
- church freedom—autonomy of the local church, with clergy
called by the local congregation
- religious freedom—absolute separation of church and state
What’s an American Baptist?
- First Baptist associates with the national denomination American Baptist Churches USA.
- There are 1.3 million American Baptists in 5,500 churches throughout the country.
- It is the most culturally and racially diverse denomination among Baptists (of which there are many!)
